Meet the INSIGHT Academy Team
Hi, I’m Sam, I’ve been with Expert Citizens for 4 years, previously as the Research and Evaluator. I would complete evaluations of services using our Insight standards of Welcoming, Listening, Learning and Leading. Complete reports and make recommendations for services to improve. Now I am the Team Leader of the Insight Academy. Incorporating lived experience into every course we offer, this is an exciting opportunity to create something, that improves Stoke-on-Trent by helping services become more person centered.

Prior to this I have worked in local Support Services for 13 years, managed a number of Volunteering / Peer Mentor projects locally and nationally for 7 years, and more recently have come from the welfare to work sector where I was for another 6 years.
Why did I join the Academy?
The fact that it can bring together training from a number of services, the lived experience from those that may have accessed them and be available to anyone local to Stoke on Trent for free is something I feel will be invaluable to Stoke and something I am very excited to be part of.

I am Lynsey and like my colleague Jonathan I am an INSIGHT Academy coordinator. I never considered working in this sector – previously my employment background had been heavily technical. However, after an unexpected life event in 2019 this led me to joining the non-profit sector as a receptionist where I loved coming into work every day knowing that I was part of a wider team making a difference to people’s lives within Stoke-on-Trent. Then the pandemic came along which meant I had to give up my post. Still wishing to pursue a post in this sector, I kept an eye out on current vacancies within the city and in January 2021 joined VOICES as a Project Assistant where part of my role was to support bookings for the Learning Programme. In March 2022 the VOICES programme sadly came to an end. However, a new adventure was just around the corner and in June 2022 I joined the INSIGHT Academy. Like at VOICES, I will be supporting with bookings for training sessions. So, I look forward booking you onto a session soon!

The training sessions will be delivered either face-to-face or online and will range from part to full days – Something for everyone to fit around their busy schedules. So, please feel free to browse the list of training sessions that are on offer and book on as many or few you feel that will better equip you to support the people you work with. Each training session details who it is aimed for, what will be covered, the duration and the location.
We are excited to be working with a range of training consultants including Jane Turner, Steven Talbot, Claire Stewart and Claire Ritchie to name a few. The rolling programme kicks off on the 23rd August with a 3 hour LGBTQ+ training session delivered by Jane Turner who has over 25 years’ experience in the community and voluntary Sector. This session will look at understanding the LGBTQ+ science, the language and culture so we can ensure we are using inclusive language, avoiding discrimination and providing the right support. This is followed by a series of four training sessions delivered by Steven Talbot who has over 16 years of learning and development knowledge. The series begins with Motivational Interviewing on 27th September, Empathy Fatigue on 4th October, Compulsive Hoarding on 17th November and finishing with Bipolar Affective Disorder on 30th November.

You don’t need to prepare anything just bring along your notepad, pen and an open and enquiring mind. For face-to-face sessions, you don’t even need to bring your lunch – this will be provided free of charge. Just let us know in advance of any special dietary requirements.
