Mapping the System: Barriers, Solutions & Actions
Author: Lauren Baldwin, Changing Futures Project Manager, Stoke-on-Trent City Council
As part of the Changing Futures programme Stoke-on-Trent a System Mapping exercise has been conducted with a number of organisations locally, to discuss the common barriers facing those experiencing multiple-disadvantage. The findings from this exercise are to shape the way we approach systems change in Stoke on Trent, and given the timeframe of the Changing Futures programme, we believe that focussing on fewer but impactful barriers will be more effective in driving lasting systems change in the city.
The report, available to download below, presents key findings provided by attendees of the programme launch conference, spanning a wide variety of organisations and job roles, including those with lived experience. Each priority area has been explored, looking at common barriers and potential solutions to the perceived problem areas.
The four key priority areas identified through this process as being the main blockages in Stoke-on-Trent are:
- Commissioning
- Workforce skills and staffing
- Referrals, eligibility, assessments and pathways
- Data sharing and systems
Our next steps are to hold a further workshop on the 1st February 2023, with the aim to create an action plan based on whether the solutions are beneficial, achievable, and what steps need to be taken next to see if we can influence Systems Change at a local or national level. Please keep a lookout for any future outcomes that may be circulated or any further events that may be held.
The report below is to be read alongside the Changing Futures “Stoke Map – Accompanying Narrative” report, to avoid duplicating what has already been documented from the earlier system mapping sessions.
