A Poetic Experience

My partner Tracy has been part of Thriving Women, a poetry group based in Teesside and lead by Julie Easley. The theme was poverty, I was so glad that my partner got back into poetry because she is so talented and amazing with words.

After several sessions the group put together a bunch of poems and made a book, and we were invited to Stockton on tees for the book launch.

The journey went smoothly and the hotel was amazing, the views we had of Stockton was great, it was happy to see a big market as most of the markets from where we live have been shrunk down.

The venue for the book launch was The Georgian Theatre, who kindly gave Thrive and The Tees Women poets access to the room for free for the book launch. It was a small hall that was filled with the poet’s family, friends and other poets.

I was humbled to see these amazing opening acts which some of the poets were more performance art style poetry.

The main act was all the poets that produced the book, Echoes of the unheard, which was all about poverty and the injustice of it all. So, as you can imagine it was an emotional cry of injustice, I couldn’t help feeling emotionally attached and so proud of not just my partner but all of women that put their emotional thoughts down in poems. Great work girls!

We will put you first whist ignoring the old and sick,

We will put you first whilst ignoring the cold and hungry children,

We will put you first whilst ignoring OUR broken infrastructure,

We will put you first whilst ignoring the causes of poverty,

We will put you first whilst putting cash in OUR back pockets.

We will put you first if you know the right people,

We will put you first if you are in the right tax bracket,

We will put you first if you are in the right clique,

We will put you first if you turn a blind eye,

We will put you first if you make a large donation.
