While many people are already involved in clinical research, there are still many who haven’t had the chance or are not well-represented, which can affect the outcomes of the research. In March 2023, the Expert Citizens linked in with with Kate Greenwood, Kat Evans, and Barbara Molonyoates from the NHS Health Research Authority (HRA) to support a project they were doing to create guidelines for better representation in clinical trials. The People-Centred Clinical Research Project, aims to ensure that the needs and priorities of those taking part in clinical research, as well as those affected by the research, are central to how the research is conducted, and representation is improved. Members of Expert Citizens participated in one of four group discussions with the HRA to help develop the People-Centred Clinical Research project. Other groups around the UK held their own group discussion, and a survey was also carried out. Through this project three important factors for people when considering participating in research were identified:
  • Trust: People need to trust the research and the researchers.
  • Purpose: People need to understand why the research matters and how their participation makes a difference.
  • Possibility: Participating in research needs to be accessible and feasible for everyone.
People-Centred Research Project also provides hallmarks of good research practice to help make it clearer to the research community what good looks like and why it is important and support conversations between research participants and research teams and influence positive change. The people-centred clinical research report and executive summary are published on the Health Research Authority website project page. Expert Citizens INSIGHT Research and Evaluations projects will use these hallmarks going forward as our guide to collaborating with universities and research teams on future projects.   [/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]
